Baroque Era Optical Illusion

Fra Andrea Pozzo's Glorification of Saint Ignatius (1691-4)

The ceiling fresco above creates the illusion of heaven opening above the congregation in the church of Sant'Ignazio in Rome.  The artist created the illusion by painting an extension of the church's architecture.  There is a disk on the floor where people can stand in order to look up and feel the full effect of the illusion.

  1. I love this picture. I really feel like i am looking down from a balcony. Just trying to do art courses online. There is so much detail in this painting i am wondering how long it took to complete it.

  2. I love it, too! Incredible detail and perspective. My textbook said it took three years to complete!
